IN UTERO

She pushes the hook through, holding it tightly with the needle-nose pliers. The thread is uncomfortable and she grimaces as it catches on her skin. She makes a simple overhand knot, then a second and a third. She couldn't quite figure out the surgeon's knot, so she tells herself this will have to do. She cuts off the excess thread and repeats the process down the length of her abdomen, impressed with how straight she'd made the incision.

When she's finished, she pours the antiseptic over the sutures and pushes herself up out of the chair, holding onto the back of it as she rediscovers her centre of gravity.

She looks at herself in the full-length mirror, smiling as she puts a protective hand on her stomach. She feels him kick and scream, and hopes that he'll soon be quiet.

She misses being pregnant but she hates being a mom.
